Gokarna ( Karnataka , South India)
Gokarna is a famous religious centre of Hindus. Gokarna is a prominent tourist destination, a place of pilgrimage by the sea-shore, of Uttar Kannada region of Karnataka and is located 60 kms away from Karwar.
The main temple of Shiva dedicated to Mahabaleshwar is considered as sacred as Varanasi, as the Atma Linga of Shiva is installed here. People come from all over the country to immerse the ashes of the dead relatives in the Thamraparni Teertha here. It is also a great cantre of Sanskrit learning.
Gokarna has become very famous for its beaches, particularly among the foreign tourists. Yana,60 kms from Gokarna, through a hilly tract has a huge natural cave with a Bhairava Linga. The two limestone hills are believed to be the ashes of Bhasmasura killed by Mohini. These natural rocks are frequented by many trekkers.
