Alumkadavu ( Kerala , South India)
Alumkadavu, located 30 kms from Kollam, is a tiny backwater hamlet famed for its boat building yard. Known as Kettuvallom, these indigenously constructed house boats are made from wooden planks packed with coconut husk and sewn together with coconut coir. No nails are used in building the boats. Situated midway between the backwaters of Kollam and Alleppey, Alumkadavu is a halting place for the tourists. The famous Ashrama of Matha Amrithanandamayi is just ten minute boat ride from Alumkadavu. The cantilevered Chinese fishing nets are extensively used in this area and they add to the colour to the natural scenery.
