India is a wild land too, large tracts of it devoted to forest. Vast latitudinal variation ensures that every kind of habitat is available to the birds and beasts that inhabit it. Up North you will run into the snow leopard and red panda. The majestic tiger, which occurs all across peninsular India, is the national animal. Efforts are on to save it, as only 1400 survive in the wild. The national bird is the peacock, known to perform an enthusiastic dance when rain clouds appear. Other fauna of note includes the Asian elephant, rhinoceros, Indian bison, many species of deer and hundreds of bird species. India is the sole habitat of the Asiatic lion.
