LANGUAGE
There are over 17 major regional languages and hundreds of dialects are spoken. Hindi is understood about everywhere but spoken specially in North India. English remains the link language and more and more people speak it every day, a legacy of India's colonial past. Tamil, spoken in Tamil Nadu, is India's oldest living language. Prakrit and Pali, languages in vogue in the age of the Buddha only interest academics now. Another classical language- Sanskrit- is rather more known and practiced.
