GURUPARVA

The Sikhs observe the birth anniversaries or Guruparbs of their Gurus. The birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev which comes on Kartik Purnima is celebrated as a festival. The birth anniversary of the tenth and last Guru, Guru Gobind Singh is also celebrated as a festival. The martyrdom of some Gurus is also observed with piety.

Guru Nanak (1469-1539), the founder of Sikhism, endeavored through his teachings to rid both Hinduism and Islam of the superficialities in religious. His teachings made him equally revered by both the communities.

The four places most sacred to the Sikhs are: Amritsar, Taran Taran, Patna and Anandpur. This Sikh festival is celebrated there with great enthusiasm. For two days and nights preceding the festival, the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book of the Sikhs) is read continuously from end to end. On the day of the festival, the Guru Granth Sahib is taken out in an impressive procession thought the streets. This festival is celebrated in the month of October/ November.
