Kodagu ( Karnataka, South Indian State )

  • Kodagu region of Karnataka is one of the most panoramic hill stations of India. The scenic splendour of the Western Ghats with undulating meadows and hills was called as Coorg or the Scotland of India. The region had been favourite place for British officials to relax amidst nature. The region is famous for coffee estates and orange orchards. Coorg is cornucopia of colonial heritage. There are many must-see tourist destinations around Kodagu/ Coorg.

  • Bhagamandala: 38 kms from Madikeri, is a small town of Bhagamandala to the west of Madikeri where the sacred river Cauvery and its tributary Kannike meet. This Sangam (confluence) is considered sacred and draws many pilgrims and visitors. Near the confluence is the Bhagandeshwara Shiva temple which has a peculiar style of architecture similar to the temples of Kerala.

    Harangi: 30 kms from Hunsur, Harangi is a beautiful reservoir close to Kushalnagar. The recently constructed reservoir is an ideal picnic spot or for weekend & short holiday. The highest point provides a breathtaking view of the vast water area below.

    Madikeri : A hill station of Kodagu and the headquarter of Kodagu (Coorg), Madikeri stands at a height of about 1525 metres elevation in rich green trap of the Western Ghats. Madikeri is about 250 kms away from Bangaluru, capital city of Karnataka. Madikeri is rich in scenes of enchanting loveliness.

    One can easily guess about its scenic splendour as one can have a glimpse of the Arabian Sea from its peak. The coffee estates and meadows of Madikeri offer splendid beauty, serenity and tranquillity.

    In addition to natural beauty, Madikeri takes a tourist to nostalgic by-lanes of colonial British past. With several preserved colonial-era buildings and architecture, visit of Madikeri offers a feel of past stepping along modern day development. The 19th century fort has several old buildings, a temple and a chapel, some of which are now converted as museums. Two life-like elephants made out of mortar stand in their majesty inside the fort. The ancient Raja's Seat is located within a beautiful garden which presents an enchanting view of the valleys below.

    Overlooking the fort is the Omkareshwara Temple dedicated to Shiva with two sacred ponds on one side. On the outskirts is the group of tombs of old kings of Kodagu, called Gaddige which are massive structures. A little away from Madikeri are two waterfalls which are situated in very picturesque surroundings. They are the Abbey and Oruppu waterfalls.

    Nagarahole: 40 kms from Hunsur is famous wildlife sanctuary of Nagarhole. The Nagarhole National Park is very well maintained with excellent forest lodges. This place gives an opportunity to the visitor to see wildlife of varied kinds from majestic elephants to bison, deer and jackal moving about within their own natural setting. Jeep and elephant rides are available for jungle safari.

    Nisargadhama: On the state highway, from Madikeri to Kushalnagar, at a distance of 2 kms are a few islets on the river Cauvery. The cluster of huts built of wood and bamboo, this resort blend with the thick forest around. It is a popular resort frequented by many tourists.

    Talacauvery: Talacauvery, about 40 kms from Madikeri, is the birth place of the sacred river Cauvery, situated on the slopes of the Brahmagiri hills. The Tula Sankramana (October) is regarded as the most auspicious day by the people of Kodagu for visiting this place. There is a small pond which is the source of the river. One can see the water gushing out at a prescribed moment known beforehand.

  • How to reach Kodagu (Coorg)

    Madikeri is connected by an excellent road from Bangalore via Mysore and Hunsur and several buses operate in this route. All the places of interest can be seen by local transport like buses, vans and hired taxis. Madikeri has very good lodging facility besides the state run hotels.
