Ahmadnagar district having dry climate is healthy. A couple of rivers make the soil fertile but still famine-prone sometimes. Rice, bajra, gramdal are important farm products. Lemons, plantains, grapes and sweet-lime grow in abundance. There are 16 sugarcane factories. Paper, soap, bangles and Ayurvedic drugs are manufactured. The famous script of 'Dhyaneshwari' was written at Newase on the banks of The Pravara in the 13th century. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sardar Patel and other top leaders were detained in Ahmadnagar Fort from 1942 to 1946 during the 'Quit India Movement'.
One of the most sought after tourist attraction of Ahmadnagar is Ahmadnagar Fort, built by Husain Nizam Shah in 1557, protected and ruled by Chand Bibi, attacked by Mughals and finally annexed by the British. Ahmadnagar Fort has been used as a royal prison a number of times. Amongst the glorious moments of Ahmadnagar Fort was the time when the entire Congress Working Committee was detained here during the Quit India Movement of 1942. Ahmadnagar Fort is definitely a must-see place.
