The state of Meghalaya was formed in 1971 and is home of three tribal groups namely the Khasis, the Jaintias and the Garos. The Khasis reside in the centre of the state, Jaintias in the east and the Garos in the east. All these tribes are characterized by matrilineal system of society in which the lineage and ancestral property are transferred from mother to daughter. Shilong is the capital city. Cherapunji is the place in the state where the highest rainfall in the world takes place. On an average, it receives 1150 cms of rain. Once, 2300 cms rain was also recorded. Almost every day rainfall is recorded here.Pitcher Plant, a botanical wonder, is an insect eating plant which is found in Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills. The state is very thinly populated. It is a land-locked area with forests and hills.
