Kumbhalgarh ( Rajasthan, North India )

Kumbhalgarh is 84 kms away from Udaipur. Kumbhalgarh, cradled in the cluster of thirteen mountain peaks of the Aravali ranges, stands as a wary sentinel to the past glory. The fort was built in 15thcentury AD by Maharana Kumbha and is the principal fortification after Chittaurgarh. The massive fort, encompassed by a 36 km long wall, has seven majestic gates and seven ramparts, one within the other. Udai Singh ascended the throne of Mewar with Kumbhalgarh as his residence and later established Udaipur.

The most picturesque of the palaces is the "Badal Mahal". Most of the ruins in Kumbhalgarh are of the Jain temples of various periods. Spread in nearly 586 sq. kms is Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary which supports a rich variety of wildlife like the panther, sloth bear, wild boar, four horned antelope and scientifically bred crocodiles in the alongwith flamingoes, cormorants, spoonbills etc.
