Festivals of Kolkata
People of Kolkata celebrate their festival with gusto. Like any other cosmopolitan metropolis, Kolkata too celebrates several festivals like Diwali, Christmas, Id-ul-Zuha, Rath Yatra, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, Doljatra (Holi), Mahavir Jayanti, Nabobarsha (Bengali New Year), Rabindra Jayanti, Kali Puja, New Year's Day and Republic Day. Each festival or celebration has its own charisma- the fireworks of Diwali or Kali Puja, the colours of Holi, the chiming church bells of Christmas, the picnics of New Year's Day, the melodious Rabindrasangeet on Rabindra Jayanti and the parades of the Republic Day.
Of all the festivals, one festival synonymous with Kolkats is the Durga Puja. Many of the descendants of the erstwhile princely families are still continuing the tradition of celebrating Durga Puja at home. A celebration of the victory of good (Goddess Durga) over evil (Demon Mahisasura), this five day festival brings out the best in Kolkata. The city puts its best face forward during this time. Magical lights fill the streets and the parks. Imaginative pandals, which are actually bamboo and cloth structures, sprout all over the city.
