Sariska National Park

Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary

Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the famous tourist destinations of Rajasthan and much larger wildlife sanctuary than the more famous Ranthambhore Wildlife Sanctuary. Efforts are being made to relocate few tigers into Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary and grow the population of the big cat but desired results are still eluding the jungle authorities.

Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is on the way to Jaipur Alwar route. The chances of spotting tiger in this vast wildlife sanctuary is rare, however, unlike Ranthambore, it is possible to visit water holes at night, by far the best time for viewing the fauna.

It is a unique feature of most of the wildlife sanctuaries of Rajasthan that these are treasure trove of rich historical heritage as well. Sariska became wildlife sanctuary in 1955 AD and bestowed with National Park status in 1979. Predominantly covered with 'dhok' trees, Sariska National Park is abode of various species of wild animals like leopard, sambhar, chital, nilgai, four-horned antelope, wild boar, rhesus macaque, langur, hyena and jungle cats. Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary also boasts of being home to India's largest population of peafowl. Also the Siliserh Lake on the edge of the park has a large number of crocodiles.

Architectural and historical heritage can be traced by visiting the ruins of medieval temples of Garh-Rajor (dating back to 10th century) and 17th century castle on Kankawari hilltop.

The most popular spot to view the jungle life in Sariska Tiger Reserve is the Kalighati Ranger Post. At this post only mattresses are supplied in its watch tower. The food supplied basic but delicious. But having safari there is a great fun. From here the fortunate may see panthers and leopards but tigers are now rare. Night safaris and boat trips on the River Rupa can also be booked. Tiger Den Tourist Bungalow in the sanctuary is convenient but the smart place to stay is Hotel Sariska Palace, former hunting lodge of Jai Singh, built in 1900 AD and facing one of the sanctuary's entrances. Much original art deco furniture has been retained.
